TURF X MADE UP

Turf are a Chicago-based firm who create "radically simple visual and acoustic solutions" to combat noise in public environments. They contacted Made Up and commissioned some visual identity work, using the aesthetic of Turf's sculptural forms as a springboard for typographic exploration.
Turf create beautifully-crafted sculptural forms that undulate and warp.
They affect how sound moves around a space, and provide a dynamic visual feature to the environment.
The brief: create a typographic/illustrative response to Turf, utilising the name, and a sense of what the company creates.
INITIAL SKETCHES
Idea selection: Turf chose two pencil sketches for
digital development.

DESIGN 2
The 2nd design was a very involved process.
First the base type was created in Illustrator,
before being converted to horizontal stripes.
This was printed, physically 'curved', and then photographed.
The resulting photography was used as the basis for the pencil sketch, which was then drawn in Illustrator as a vector.
Finally, this was coloured and had some finishing touches applied
in Photoshop.
